What is the Importance of Harvard Referencing?

Also known as one of the ‘most commonly used referencing styles’, Harvard Referencing is a popular style of referencing used for citations in academic papers. For referencing your text according to the Harvard style, you will include the Author’s surname and the year of publication in brackets. Page numbers are also added in some cases.

In-Text Citation also consists of two types: Direct and Indirect.

1. In-Text Citation for Two or Three Authors:

All surnames are stated followed by year and page name.

EXAMPLE	Fletcher & Williams (2015, p.56) state that micromanaging employees to an extent that their performance starts being affected is greatly regarded as one of the negative effects of Micromanagement.

 

2. In-Text Citation for Four or More Authors:

The first author’s name is written followed by ‘et al’.

FORMAT	Fletcher et al (2015, p.56) states…
EXAMPLE	Fletcher et al (2015, p.56) states that micromanaging employees to an extent that their performance starts being affected is greatly regarded as one of the negative effects of Micromanagement.

 

3. In-Text Citation for No Author:

The association responsible for the post or the title of the source is used in italics.

FORMAT	Performance Appraisal & Employee Performance (2015, p.56)
EXAMPLE	Micromanaging employees to an extent that their performance starts being affected is greatly regarded as one of the negative effects of Micromanagement (Performance Appraisal & Employee Performance, 2015, p.56)

 

4. In-Text Citation for Multiple Works from Same Author in Same Year:

Each of the works of the same author released in the same year is allotted with a letter after the year. This is also done in the References list.

FORMAT	Fletcher (2015a, p.56) states… or (Fletcher, 2015a, p.56)
EXAMPLE	Fletcher (2015a, p.56) states that micromanaging employees to an extent that their performance starts being affected are greatly regarded as one of the negative effects of Micromanagement. 5. In-Text Citation for Multiple Works:

Semicolon is put between the different references.

FORMAT	(Fletcher, 2015, p.56; Williams, 2017, p.89; Smith, 2014, p.108)
